Our small friendly gym does fitness differently

Does entering a gym or leisure centre make you feel overwhelmed?

  • Sheer number of people put you off?
  • Staff a little too eager?
  • Music and surroundings too loud?
  • Exercising alongside strangers feels too much?
  • Gym’s website daunting?

This is a familiar experience for so many, and it’s not limited to fitness centres.

Approximately one in seven people in the UK are neurodivergent – that’s between 10 to 13.5 million people.

Many have faced similar challenges from an early age, often feeling isolated and like they don’t quite belong.

This is why Strong Path CIC exists.

With over 13 years experience working in the fitness industry

Founder, James Dewar-Haggart has over 13 years’ experience working in the fitness industry.
Realising the need for a space that caters to both neurodivergent and neurotypical people, James opened a gym that runs inclusive personal and small group training that accommodates everyone’s needs.

Abby’s Journey

Background

At Strong Path CIC, our mission is to provide a safe, inclusive space for neurodiverse individuals and others who find traditional gym environments overwhelming. Abby, a member of our gym, is a perfect example of the transformative impact that personalised support and an inclusive fitness environment can have on both physical and mental well-being.

Abby’s story

When Abby first joined Strong Path CIC, she had a clear goal in mind: to improve her strength and fitness so she could pursue a career in the ambulance service. Abby needed to pass a rigorous physical test to qualify for the role, and she knew that a traditional gym environment would not suit her needs. She felt anxious and unmotivated, and traditional fitness spaces often caused sensory overload.

Abby’s experience at Strong Path CIC

Abby found the support she needed at Strong Path CIC. Our non-judgmental, welcoming environment and small group training sessions allowed her to focus on her fitness without feeling overwhelmed. She worked closely with our coaches to build her strength and endurance, and over time, her confidence grew alongside her physical abilities.

Abby shared

“The coaches get to know everyone really well—our strengths, weaknesses, preferences, and any injuries. I can ask questions without fear of judgement. I like the small groups because I know help is there if I need it, but it’s not overwhelming socially. We have good conversations that keep me motivated, but if I don’t feel like talking, I can listen to my music instead. The other members are friendly, and I’ve never had any issues.”

The impact

Abby’s dedication and the supportive environment at Strong Path CIC paid off. Not only did she pass her physical test for the ambulance service, but she also set a new record for one of the tasks during her assessment. She has since secured a full-time job in the ambulance service, where she now helps others, fulfilling her career aspirations.

Abby explains

Before joining Strong Path, I didn’t leave the house much. I felt unmotivated, my physical health wasn’t great, and I was anxious and miserable most days. Now, I’m happier, I have a good career ahead of me, and I’m fitter and healthier. I’m calm, less anxious, and I have goals I want to achieve. Strong Path CIC has made all the difference.

Maiya’s Journey

Background

At Strong Path CIC, we strive to create a welcoming and supportive environment for individuals like Maiya, who face significant barriers in traditional gym settings. Maiya has
autism, panic disorder, mild depression, and severe anxiety.

The idea of attending a mainstream gym triggers intense anxiety for her, particularly due to the noise and the fear of
people looking at her. This social pressure often causes Maiya to shut down and disconnect, making it impossible for her to focus on her surroundings or tasks.

Maiya’s parents recognised her interest in exercise but knew that finding the right environment would be key. A traditional gym, with its loud atmosphere and busy nature,
would not work for her.

Maiya’s experience at Strong Path CIC

Maiya was introduced to Strong Path CIC through her father, who attended a free taster session and saw firsthand how the quieter, more personalised environment could benefit Maiya. After joining, Maiya quickly felt at ease due to the smaller, quieter space and the 1:1 guidance she received from James, a personal trainer who specialises in working with individuals on the autism spectrum.

James provided Maiya with detailed instruction on how to use the equipment, reassuring her and making her feel comfortable with every step. Maiya’s anxiety about not knowing how to use the equipment disappeared, as James took the time to explain things at her pace, making sure she never felt silly for asking questions.

Her father shares:

“James is an amazing coach with a deep understanding of ASD, and he knows how to communicate with Maiya to get the best out of her in every session. The smaller, quieter gym has made all the difference for her. She now looks forward to her sessions and leaves with a smile on her face, which, as a parent, is wonderful to see.”

The impact

Since joining Strong Path CIC, Maiya’s confidence has significantly improved. She is now able to participate in small group sessions, working out alongside others without feeling overwhelmed. Knowing that she isn’t the only person in the gym with a diagnosis has been comforting for her, and it has allowed her to feel more connected and capable during each session.

Additionally, before joining the gym, Maiya was attending weekly therapy sessions with CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services). Her therapist has since noted Maiya’s remarkable progress, and she no longer needs to attend therapy regularly. Her family attributes much of this improvement to her gym experience, which has provided a healthy outlet for her emotions and a boost to her self-esteem.

Maiya’s father explains

“Maiya feels so much better about herself now. She’s gaining confidence and always feels good after a workout. She’s even started discussing
nutrition with James, as she wants to improve her eating habits. This is such a positive step for her.”
